My Reviews

Kim Otto and Carlos Gaspar are FBI Special Agents assigned to develop a file on Jack Reacher . Kim is considered the number one on this assignment and will do everything in her power to prove herself. Carlos is the number two and is a veteran agent who was injured in the line of duty and struggles with the pain of that injury daily. The agents are thrust together and proceed to Margrave Georgia on a mission that is so vague even they aren't sure what they are looking for. They are introduced to Margrave Chief of Police Beverly Roscoe who they hope will provide some insight into their search. They are immediately swept up in a murder case and a set of circumstances that will spiral them on a course they never could have anticipated.

I personally have never read a Reacher novel so my reactions were based solely on what I read in this book. I found the story to be very action packed and full of suspense and mystery. I enjoyed the character Kim Otto, a woman determined to make her mark in the work force and ready to risk it all to do so. She has a quick wit and a genuine understanding of her own gut feelings yet is vulnerable and has a tremendous fear of flying.

Carlos Gaspar is a character who is very likeable and I enjoyed the dialogue and banter between him and Kim. It was interesting how their boss was woven in the story, never named but always present and one step ahead of them at every turn. Police Chief Beverly Roscoe was another strong character whose personality and point of view contributed a great deal to the development of the story. The total cast of characters was woven into the story in a way that contributed to the suspense and drama in a tangible way.

I thought the story was well written and set a pace that kept me involved and intrigued. I recommend this story; it is packed with action, suspense and uncertainties at every turn.

The Physician (Cole) [Kindle Edition]

Description

Read by millions in thirty-two countries, soon to be a major motion picture, and voted “one of the ten most-beloved books of all time,” here is the first English-language digital edition of Noah Gordon’s masterwork
In eleventh-century London, a child holds the hand of his dying mother and is terrified, aware something is taking her. Orphaned and given to an itinerant barber-surgeon, Rob Cole becomes a fast-talking swindler, peddling a worthless medicine. But as he matures, his strange gift—an acute sensitivity to impending death—never leaves him, and he yearns to become a healer.
Arab madrassas are the only authentic medical schools, and he makes his perilous way to Persia. Christians are barred from Muslim schools, but claiming he is a Jew, he studies under the world’s most renowned physician, Avicenna. How the woman who is his great love struggles against her only rival—medicine—makes a riveting modern classic.

  From Library Journal

When nine-year-old Rob Cole felt the life force slipping from his mother's hand he could not foresee that this terrifying awareness of impending death was a gift that would lead him from the familiar life of 11th-century London to small villages throughout England and finally to the medical school at Ispahan. Though apprenticed to an itinerant barber surgeon, it is the dazzling surgery of a Jewish physician trained by the legendary Persian physician Avicenna that inspires him to accept his gift and to commit his life to healing by studying at Avicenna's school. Despite the ban on Christian students, Rob goes there, disguising himself as a Jew to gain admission. Gordon has written an adventurous and inspiring tale of a quest for medical knowledge pursued in a violent world full of superstition and prejudice. Recommended. Literary Guild alternate. My Reviews

This engrossing book traces the life of 11th century Englishman, Robert Cole. Cole begins as a normal child, is quickly orphaned, and is then apprenticed to a barber-surgeon. As he travels throughout England with his master, the reader is introduced to all aspects of English peasant life. Family life, morality, religion, sexuality, medicine, xenophobia and history are all presented in an interesting, subtle, and easily read writing style. When Cole grows up and decides to be a physician, he comes in contact with Jewish doctors who explain to him that the best universities are in Moslem-ruled Persia, where no Christian may go. Determined to learn, Cole overcomes this obstacle by pretending to be a Jew. As he travels and studies in Persia, the same questions of lifestyle are addressed, only this time within the Jewish and Moslem communities. This is a great read for anyone who likes adventurous stories about growing up, or who is interested in sociology, religion, medicine, or history.
